the world. SATCO’s initial terminal capacity was
a 60,000-ton located within the Port of Tampa, which
was expanded to 80,000 tons capacity in 2000.

SATCO has established itself as a major supplier
of smelter sulphuric acid to the phosphate industry in Florida
and the US Gulf. Sales to the phosphate market have increased
from 300,000 tons in 1989 to over 1.2 million tons in 1999.
SATCO plays a significant role in the distribution of smelter
sulphuric acid not only as a buyer and seller but also through
exchange agreements, which result in important freight savings
to the smelter industry and the buyers.
Industrial sales of sulphuric acid are a growing
complement to SATCO’s phosphate business. From an initial
sales level in 1989 of 5,000 tons, sales will reach approximately
400,000 tons in 2002. Many of SATCO’s phosphate customers
are also suppliers of sulphur-burned acid that SATCO utilizes
for sale to various industrial users, including water treatment
facilities, pulp and paper manufactures, aluminum sulfate
producers, and battery manufactures. SATCO also markets smelter
acid from refineries in the Western U.S. and Mexico and distributes
this acid to customers in the Southwestern U.S. and Texas
for use in water treatment and ore leaching.
SATCO facilitates deliveries of sulphuric acid
to its customers by seagoing vessels, barges, rail cars and
trucks. Most deliveries to the phosphate industry are by direct
vessel or truck shipments from the Tampa terminal. For the
industrial market, SATCO maintains a fleet of over 300 rail
cars to provide timely delivery of 93 or 98% grade acid to
customers throughout the United States.
